People all over Houston know where to go for great entertainment. Toyota Center has housed some of the most popular events in the Houston area. It is home to the Houston Rockets, as well as the Aeros, the local AHL team. But basketball and hockey are not the only events going on in the arena. Concerts in the arena bring in a huge number of fans every year, Cirque du Soleil performs there, and WWE wrestling matches are held there on occasion. Despite the number of events, the arena is 100% family friendly. It is designed to make visitors feel comfortable and at home. In fact, the whole building was built 32 feet below ground level so fans would not have to walk up stairs to get to their seats! Even parking is convenient, with the 2,500 parking space Toyota Tundra garage connected to the arena by private skybridge. So if you’re looking for a place to have an evening of fun, check out Toyota Center. There’s always something exciting happening at this Houston arena.
The Toyota Center came about because of the need for a new sports facility in Houston. The previous sports facility, the Summit, was getting old and wasn’t able to keep up with the teams or the new technology. Rockets owner Leslie Alexander fought hard for the creation of a new facility, and construction began in July 2001. Construction went smoothly and the arena opened in September 2003. The seating capacity is large, with 18,300 seats for basketball games, 17,800 seats for ice hockey, and up to 19,300 seats for concerts. The whole project cost $235 million, with the city of Houston paying $182 million, the Rockets paying $43 million for enhancements, and Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota paying $100 million just for naming rights.
The first event ever held in the arena was a Fleetwood Mac concert in October, 2003, followed closely by a Rockets game. The first year was a successful one, with over 1.5 million people filling the arena seats. It has won the Allen Award for Civic Enhancement by Central Houston, the Rookie of the Year award by the Harlem Globetrotters, and was a finalist in the Best New Concert Venue contest by Pollstar Magazine. The arena continues to house the Rockets and the Aeros, and brings people to Houston from all over the country for Toyota Center concerts and special events all year round.
