Rice Owls History

The Rice Owls started playing football in 1912. They played in the original Rice Stadium until 1950, when a demand for more seating required the construction of a new Rice Stadium. The new stadium now seats 70,000 fans. In 1974 the new stadium hosted Super Bowl VIII, and has also hosted a speech by John F. Kennedy in 1962. Rice University plays in the NCAA Division I, and has been a part of Conference USA’s Western Division since 2005. Rice has a history of a cross-town rivalry with University of Houston; the football game with the most attendance is always the Rice vs. UH game.
