Reliant Stadium History

Reliant Stadium was designed to be the home of the Houston Texans as well as home to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Construction began in March 2000 on the 1.9 million square foot arena. The stadium boasts a capacity of 71,500 seats, with 97,000 square feet of nature grass for its playing surface. It is named after Reliant Energy, the product of a 32-year, $300 million naming rights deal made in 2000. Thirty months and $352 million later, the stadium officially opened in August 2002. With its grand opening, it became the first ever football facility with a retractable roof. The roof opens and closes for the convenience of fans, and to avoid inclement weather; it can open within ten minutes. In September 2008, the arena sustained minor damage from Hurricane Ike. There was no structural damage, but debris flew into the stadium and there was some water damage. The stadium was cleaned and reopened in October. With all the glass and all the lights, it practically glows in the dark at night.
