The original museum was established 1909, but it's current location and home was built next to Hermann Park in 1969. The Houston Museam of Natural Science is the second most visited non-Smithsonian museum in the United States, right behind the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

The museum hosts a multitude of elaborite exhibits such as the: Burke Baker Planetarium, Cockrell Butterfly Center and the Wortham IMAX Theater. Not to mention many more that have focus on subjects from pre-history to the history of space travel and technology.

Aside from it's permanent exhibits the Museum brings in a lot of special guests and exhibits that range from home based "Texas! The Exhibition" to "Warriors, Tombs and Temples" which focuses on tombs from around the ancient world.
