For years Houstonians have been enjoying live theater at the Cullen Theater, reserving their Cullen Theater tickets well in advance of their anticipated shows, and for ample reasons. The venue was built with funds entirely provided by the private sector at the height of the oil bust of the 1980s, making this grand venue truly a community effort of love. It is estimated that over 2,200 private individuals donated $100 or less to fund the project in addition to $20 million from the American General Insurance Company foundation funds, making this building the legacy of the late Gus S. Wortham.
