The venue was built with funds entirely provided by the private sector at the height of the oil bust of the 1980s, making this grand venue truly a community effort of love. It is estimated that over 2,200 private individuals donated $100 or less to fund the project in addition to $20 million from the American General Insurance Company foundation funds, making this building the legacy of the late Gus S. Wortham.
