Monster trucks began in the 1970s, simply as trucks with a raised suspension that were used to get over obstacles or for truck-pulling competitions. Videos of these demonstrations gained the attention of an event promoter and one Bob Chandler was asked to use his truck “Bigfoot” to crush cars in front of a crowd. 

Car crushing and other Monster Truck exhibitions started out as side-shows to other events, but USHRA (United Sates Hot Rod Association) developed it into a competitive sport by putting the trucks through drag races over obstacle courses. The sport began to take shape and the Monster Truck was redesigned to be taller, lighter, and faster using straight-rail frames, fiberglass bodies, as well as lighter axle components.
