Houston Rockets History
Houston Rockets' Towering Yao Ming

The Houston Rockets were originally founded in 1967 in San Diego, and after being bought by Robert Breitbard for $1.75 million, they joined the NBA as an expansion team for the 1967-1968 NBA season. The San Diego franchise was dubbed the Rockets because San Diego had been pursuing the slogan of being "a city of motion". While in San Diego, the Rockets played in the San Diego Sports Arena.

Jack McMahon headed up the Rockets as team coach, and the Houston Rockets' first draft pick, in 1967, was none other than future Hall of Fame coach, Pat Riley. The Rockets still lost an NBA record of 67 games in their first season.

A real estate broker, Wayne Duddleston, and banker Billy Goldberg, bought the Rockets franchise for 5.6 million dollars and moved the team to Houston, Texas. The Houston Rockets franchise became the first NBA team in Texas and the team's nickname of "Rockets" well fit due to Houston being the approximare home of NASA just on Houston's outskirts.

The Houston Rockets began the 2007-08 season with recently hired Rick Adelman as the team's 11th head coach.

On June 14, the Rockets traded Juwan Howard to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Mike James and Justin Reed.

In the 2007 NBA Draft, with the 26th pick, the Houston Rockets selected PG Aaron Brooks, from Oregon, traded with the SuperSonics to receive Pick #31 PF Carl Landry from Purdue, and with the 54th overall pick selected SG Brad Newley from Australia.

On July 12, guard Vassilis Spanoulis was traded to the San Antonio Spurs along with the rights for the 2009 second-round draft pick. In return, the Rockets received center Jackie Butler and the rights to Luis Scola, a 2002 second-round draft pick yet to play in the NBA. 24 hours after this deal was made, Scola came to a "Basic Agreement" which could see him playing for the Rockets next season. Less than a week later, Scola signed with the Rockets.

On July 20 guard Steve Francis signed a 2 year deal with the Rockets, ten days after he accepted a buyout of the last two seasons of his $30 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. He is expected to compete for a starting job with Mike James and Rafer Alston.

On September 7, it was also announced that the Rockets will debut a new court design for the 2007-08 season. The court design includes a lighter varnished wood inside the three point area, similar to the Seattle Supersonics, while the rest are dark varnished wood. The color red will remain on the Rockets logo, and the script. This court's design is similar to that of the Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Hornets, in which most of the hardwood is exposed.

2008-2009 Season Update

For better or worse, the colorful slogan for the 2008-2009 Houston Rockets has been dubbed "Get Red." Fans understandably differ wildly in their excitement about saying "Get Red!" while rooting for their home team and city. There is no word whether the new slogan has increased Rockets Tickets sales.

On May 7, when Steve Francis exercised a player option with the Rockets, allowing him to take a spot in the 2008-2009 Rockets roster, he had just suffered some rather bothersome injuries just the previous season, causing some momentary concern for management.

During the 2008 NBA Draft on June 30, the Rockets took in Nicolas Batum as 25th pick, and Maarty Leunen as 54th. A three-way draft day trade also was made with the Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies. The Rockets traded Nick Batum to the Trail Blazers forvalued draft rights to Darrell Arthur while Joey Dorsey was made 33rd pick. They traded the draft rights of Arthur to the Grizzlies for Donte Greene the 28th pick in the draft. The Rockets gained Brent Barry from the San Antonio Spurs on July 8th.

August 14th : The Houston Rockets traded Bobby Jackson, Donte Greene and a first round draft pick for 2009 to the Sacramento Kings in return for Ron Artest, Patrick Ewing Jr. and Sean Singletary. Artest rejoined with former coach Rick Adelman as he played under Adelman in Sacramento for half the year. Artest lends a boost in offensive scoring to the team, and bolsters an already quite strong Rockets defensive team.

August 25: Rockets trade Sean Singletary to Phoenix Suns in exchange for guard D.J. Strawberry, the 59th overall pick in 2007 by the Suns. This move helps bring some added competence to the Rockets' SG position.

August 29, the Houston Rockets traded Patrick Ewing, Jr. to the New York Knicks in exchange for French center Frederic Weis, a 1999 first-round draft pick who has still a mostly untested NBA commodity. So far there has been no indication as to whether ot not Weis will give up playing basketball overseas to move to the NBA arena, but many fans are still hoping.
