Houston Dynamo History

Originally the San Jose Earthquakes, the Houston Dynamo moved from California to the great state of Texas in December 2005. When the team first moved to Houston, they were named the Houston 1836 in honor of the day the city of Houston was founded. However, this name created quite a bit of controversy with the Hispanic fans. The reference to 1836 reminded them more of the war for Texas independence than the establishment of the city of Houston. So the name of the team was changed to Dynamo, in reference to the previous Houston soccer team, the Dynamos. The Houston Dynamo played their first season in 2006. The Orange Crush proved just what a powerhouse they can be by winning the Major League Soccer (MLS) Championship two years in a row, in 2006 and 2007. Under Coach Dominic Kinnear, the team has done well every year, and the 2011 season will be no exception. Currently the team plays in University of Houston’s Robertson Stadium, but a new stadium is under construction. In February 2011, construction began on the new Houston Dynamo soccer stadium in downtown Houston. This stadium will be a soccer specific stadium and will seat between 20,000 and 22,000 fans. The soccer stadium will be the third sporting facility in downtown Houston, and is scheduled to open in April 2012.
