Houston Cougars History

The University of Houston Cougars showed up on the scene in 1946. They play in Robertson Stadium which was originally built in 1941, and holds 32,000 fans. Over the years the Cougars have won ten conference championships and sent several players to the College Football Hall of Fame including Andre Ware and Wilson Whitley. Andre Ware went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 1989. The Houston Cougars are a member of the Conference USA intercollegiate athletic conference and play NCAA Division I football. Coach Kevin Sumlin, the eleventh Cougar coach, has been leading the team since 2007, and continues to lead the Coogs to victory. The Cougar mascot is Shasta, a female cougar. In the early years, Shasta was a real live female cougar who got her name from a school wide contest. The entrant who won was Joe Randol who submitted, “Shasta (she has to). Shasta have a cage. Shasta have a keeper. Shasta have a winning ball club. Shasta have the best.” In 1989 when Shasta V passed away due to kidney failure, interim President George Magner ended the tradition of having a live cougar as a mascot. Now Shasta is a costume.

Students may get in for free but if you aren’t a student then you should really try MyTicketIn, and get there early! Robertson stadium fills up quick, especially if the Cougars are playing against Rice.
